geez, jim, do you even read these sites?   or think about 'em at all?

to save everyone else from a useless trip and 5 wasted minutes,
let me tell you that 7 of the 10 "dirt-cheap kindle-3 knock-offs"
don't include a price.   2 of the 10 are more expensive than kindle
($366 and $225).   and the other one weighs in with a $90 price...
so we've got one semi-dirt-cheap kindle-3 "knock-off".   at most.

but of course it's not the hardware that makes the kindle attractive,
not in the slightest.   it's the e-book inventory which amazon offers.
and which none of these "knock-offs" can ever hope to hook up with.

so don't waste your money...   don't even waste those 5 minutes...

Didn't realize you were such a fan of Kindles BB.

One might continue to hope that one of these "cheap knock-offs" offers:

ePub.

Adobe DRM (not that I like DRM but at least one can buy Adobe DRM books from
a variety of vendors).

Ability to "check out" ePubs from your local library.

The option to directly download ePub files from a website.

Compared to Kindle:

No ePub, rather MOBI.

Amazon DRM which means one can only buy books from Amazon

No ability to "check out" ePubs from your local library.

The option to directly download MOBI files from a website.

Even if "all" one of these knock-offs did was to offer a Kindle-like feature
set -- but on ePubs instead of MOBIs -- this would be step forward.

Speak for yourself. I only use my Kindle and Kindle DX to read free books.
I've never bought an e-book from Amazon, nor do I intend to. (There is
the added offence to us European Kindle holders that we're even supposed
to pay for downloading Amazon's "free" e-books, a couple of dozen
euro-cents for every "free" e-book! And there's a rather heavy surcharge
on Amazon's US price for every regular e-book, plus many of them cannot
be purchased in Europe.)

Still, even without ever purchasing any Amazon e-books, the Kindles
are wondeful devices, and I couldn't go without them. (The iPad is
wonderful, too, after it gets dark! I use Kindles in daytime, and the
iPad in nighttime, and the iPhone while moving about -- Stanza app,
naturally.)
