For those wishing to know: Mr. Ritchie's novel doesn't such much conclude 
as come to a stop: he's out of things he cares about and wants to write 
about.  Intriguingly there might be a second edition of this book 
(although Norfolk libraries don't think so), which is shorter, and so 
might be a better read.
