The Gold-Headed Cane, by William Macmichael
53557
[Author: Introduction by Sir William Osler and Preface by Francis R.
Packard]
[William Macmichael (1783-1879) was an English physician and
historian. In 1827 he anonymously published _The Gold-Headed Cane_.
The cane relates his life with six famous physicians: John Radcliffe,
Richard Mead, Anthony Askew, William Pitcairn, David Pitcairn, and
Matthew Baillie. The narrative is biographical and historical but
provides only limited information about medical practices of the time.
Its first owner, John Radcliffe, is best remembered today through the
beneficence of his estate, which founded the Radcliffe Infirmary as well
as an observatory and science library at Oxford.]
