[PW] Womanless Wedding

I have no idea where the idea started. Ever since I can remember,(at
least 50 years) my relatives have staged a "shotgun wedding" at
anniversary celebrations. All of the parts are played by males.
Costumes included oversized wedding dresses and mop heads for wigs. The
make-up was excessive and the script was impromptu but always funny and
suited to the couple. I had no idea other people did this. I always
thought it was a strange family tradition.

I couldn't find a Wikipedia article about the "Womanless Wedding," a
'play,' if you can call it that, where a wedding is staged, and all the
women involved are played by men in drag. You can find a couple of
current
examples on YouTube. One website claimed it began as a Civil War
entertainment by the troops. Does anyone know any more about its
origins?
