Dogs at the Fairbanks Animal Shelter, Alaska

Don and I ran 7 dogs on Sunday, a cool and rainy morning.

The back yard at the shelter is full. Many of these dogs may be euthanized
if homes are not found or if a bunch of new dogs come in. Part of what we
ran were from a group of 7 sled dogs that were dropped off on Friday.

RAJA House C #6-20-5 This dog has been at the shelter for almost a couple
of months. She was quite barky at first but seems better now. She is
terribly thin and definitely needs some weight on her. She is a high energy
girl that loves people and gets along with other dogs. She is cream colored
and sprinty looking and weighs probably less than 40 pounds although she
should probably be in the mid 40’s. She is fine boned. She ran great. A
lot of drive and enthusiasm. We ran her in lead and she did great. She is
all business when in harness. Raja will need some TLC at first because of
her weight but she would make a wonderful addition to a faster team. No dew
claws.

RUSTY House G #7-28-4 Rusty had been in foster care but was brought back
because the people were thinking that they couldn’t run him in the
wintertime because he has few or no toenails. I asked a vet about this and
she said that if they aren’t there at all or at least some nubs then he
shouldn’t have any problems at all. He is a middle age dog that will give
you a “high 5” when you come by. He is red in color, around 50 pounds. He
must have had a hard early life for his ears were probably frostbitten as
was his tail. (he has a shortened tail and missing pieces out of his ears).
He is a favorite of many. His ex owner said he was a leader but he is a
great swing dog and will lead although he likes to turn the team around at
his whim. He has decent speed and is very driven and a hard worker. He is
already neutered.

The following 5 came in together. Some are probably siblings.

TALKEETNA House J #8-3-7. He may have never been in harness. He is a year
old, black and white with blue eyes. He will bark at you when you first
approach him but if you are gentle, he will love you all over. He is easy
to handle and lets me poke around his mouth and check him all over. He was
confused at first in the team but once we took off he got it right away. He
is a stocky boy at 50 pounds but has a lot of power. No sprinting for this
boy but a good worker and a nice dog. No dew claws.

KODIAK House L #8-3-6 Possibly the sister to Talkeetna. She is VERY sweet.
Lots of white with black spots. A taller, yet robust girl that weighs
probably around 50+ pounds. We started her out with a bunch of sprinty dogs
and we were going too fast for her. But she worked hard and we ended up
going back to the truck because the rest of the dogs in that team were too
fast for her. She has great potential, a nice gait and gets along with
other dogs. She has blue eyes and is very pretty.

No dew claws.

NORTH POLE House O #8-3-1 He is a larger but quite stocky boy.
Black/brown/white with blue eyes. 55+ pounds. He is one of these “clunky”
looking dogs that surprises me when put in harness. He is a VERY hard
worker. Nice lope. He did crab a bit when he was trotting but he was
pulling hard wanting to go faster. He can be quite shy at first and is a
little hard to approach at the shelter. But often these dogs that just get
dropped off at the shelter need some time to adjust to their new
surroundings. He is a powerhouse of a boy. Would make a good rec dog. No
dew claws.

PALMER House K #8-3-2 She is a 5 year old petite girl that is very friendly
and loves people. The ex owner said she was a leader and I’m sure she is!!
We started her off in lead and she was a bossy girl, in the face of my other
leader. We moved her out of lead and into wheel where she could run by
herself. She is growly with other dogs but doesn’t seem to want to fight.
Just a defensive girl. She will take some gentle guidance to get her out of
this mode but she is a very hard worker with a good gait. She weighs around
40 pounds.

KOTZEBUE House N #8-3-5 She was the star of our runs on Sunday. She is a 7
year old female who is driven and a good leader. We put her in lead pretty
much right off the bat. She held the line out perfectly and was screaming
to go. She has an excellent gait (loping) and is more sprinty looking. She
has a fair number of scratches and older wounds on her maybe from a previous
spat. We had her beside one of my female leaders who can be quite wild and
saw no indication of any sort of aggression. She is a shy girl but will
approach you for pats if you are gentle. She would make a great leader for
a junior or someone who has a team of dogs in her age group that still are
charging to go.

JINGA house E #7-30-15 We put her in the 2nd team and she definitely has
some back end issues. It could be chiropractic. She may be sent out for an
evaluation. We could tell that she really wanted to go but was physically
unable to pull for very long. She is a nice leggy girl with a Siberian look
to her. She is quite thin also and should weigh 50+ pounds. She is already
spayed.

Thanks to Don for urging me to go out in the rain to run the dogs because
today (Monday) is even worse with rain all night and still coming down!
