posting this on behalf of Ronnie Rosenberg:
I just talked to Cathy Harms at Fish and Game about the wolves. The
Division of Fish and Game is planning a public meeting in Two Rivers. Time and date
will be announced later today.
What Cathy said is that this wolf pack is presently showing appropriate
restraint around humans, but has learned that dogs are food. As such, they are
getting habituated to hunting for dogs. This is almost impossible to break
them of, is not a chance encounter, but is now something they have learned. Thus
far they have avoided humans and scattered when approached by them, but this
may or may not continue as they are venturing into subdivisions and populated
areas. I requested that Fish and Game set up either an email listserve or
a website so sightings could be listed and news could be updated and readily
available.. The last wolf kill at 16.5 mile CHSR was right near my house as
wolves were seen in the dog yard of a neighbor who lives in back of me, so
the wolves likely transversed my property. Besides leaving lights on and
keeping a radio playing outside at night, Cathy suggested having an air horn and
bear spray at hand for venturing out into one’s dog yard at night.
Scattering strong scents such as human urine or essential oils may help. In Europe,
people string rope from tree to tree with rags every few feet—the flapping of
the rags is a deterrent. Not sure how that would work here with low winds.
Cathy had some other ideas to try as well—such as that orange plastic
construction site fencing which may act as a visual barrier. Ronnie
