I just returned from a meeting about the Two Rivers/North Pole wolves. The
information presented is too lengthy to detail here but it appears that
while wolves occasionally have killed dogs in the borough, there is one
particular pack that seems to be doing most of the damage and getting more
habituated to residential areas. More people are getting concerned and
trapping attempts are increasing. Whether you agree with trapping these
wolves or not, trapping efforts are increasing. Please watch for traps on
and near the trail system in Two Rivers, along Nordale Rd and Chena Lakes.
Lots of opinions were expressed at the meeting, but the points were made
about not storing dog food in open areas and not allowing dogs to run free
on the trail system in the affected area. If they venture off the trail
even a little, they can run into traps and snares. And since this pack
thinks dogs are now food, dogs running at large are at risk, and dogs hit by
cars and found by wolves will reinforce to the wolves that dogs are food.
People were cautioned about child safety with this pack as it is behaving
atypically, coming into lighted yards and not necessarily fleeing upon human
contact.
