Thank you to Don and Leslie for helping to run the shelter dogs today! (March 20)

Here in Fairbanks, Alaska it was a sunny day but a sad one as the shelter is near filled to capacity with huskies and the staff will have to decide who to kill and who to keep. Not a job that I would want to do!

We ran 6 shelter dogs today in a team of 8. We used my 4 wheeler again just for ease of control although I couldn’t get it started so the dogs had to pull the dead weight. You sure could tell which dogs were good workers and today every single dog was great. We had a team of very driven dogs with great attitude. Most of these dogs are more mid distance/distance type dogs although we couldn’t see true speed today but I’m sure some of these dogs have plenty!

EMMA #3-8-9 House E…this is the sweetest, most friendly husky that you will find. She loves everyone. She gets along with other dogs and she is also very driven. She was originally found out in North Pole at Plack and Hollowell but no one came to claim her.

She is just a pup. Maybe a year old and grey in color. She is also quite small. But in that little package is a ton of dog that loves to run and pull. Emma has an excellent and efficient gait although she never broke into a trot even when we were going very slowly. She was hard on the line the whole time and being in wheel she was really helping to pull the 4 wheeler and myself (Don started out pushing but we gained speed and left him behind!). This pup would be a great family or kid’s dog. She would probably do well as a house dog too in an active family. She is a favorite of many at the shelter.

JULES #3-12-14 House J…Jules came in with Coral and Dancer (see below). He is a red pointer mix around 45 pounds. He has a good thick coat for a pointer mix! This boy is young and friendly. Gets along with other dogs and very affectionate with people. He is a very hard worker. Tight on the line the whole time. Very nice gait. I think he would have a lot of speed. His coat is a bit “ratty” but with some good nutrition he should become shiny and sleek.

LASSIE #3-15-4 House M….she is a 45 pound tri colored husky. Great bloodlines. She is 5 years old and has run in several stage races and has done well. She has an excellent gait and is very driven. She can be a bit shy with other dogs but we put her beside Jules and she was barking and ready to go. A bit shy at the shelter but warms up quickly. This is a really nice experienced dog for a rec musher. She always ran swing for her ex owner.

RON #3-15-1 House P…Ron is a 50 pound white dog who has a ton of attitude and drive. He usually trots and he was very efficient at it. He is a tad bit shy but warms up quickly. He has great bloodlines also. This is a traditional husky who is 3 years old and just coming into his prime.

DENALI #3-15-3 House N….Denali is a yearling. He is a tall leggy guy with a bit of a bowlegged front end but didn’t seem to bother him running. He has a long gait that was smooth. He is around 50 pounds. He is tri-colored with striking amber eyes and although he seems stand-offish at first he really likes pets and back rubs. We had him in wheel so he worked doubly hard today!

STAR #3-15-2 House O He is an older black/dark brown male who has lead in the Open North American years ago and has run many stage races. He is VERY friendly. He was at the Ice Park with Miriam last Saturday and he loved the crowds and the kids. This is a great dog for a starter team who needs a leader or a rec team that would need a back up leader. We were going too slowly for him as he was crabbing a bit in his swing position. Star is 8 years old and still has many years of running left in him.

The 4 dogs above have just don’t have the speed for their owner who hoped that they could find a good home with someone else.

CORAL (#3-12-15) House C and DANCER (#3-12-13) House D….these are tiny husky/pointer or possibly border collie mixes. I love these little girls! I took them skijoring yesterday. I don’t think either of these young girls has been in harness. Dancer didn’t want to go but Coral did a half mile OK. These 2 girls would make great pets for an active family. They seem to have that Border Collie intelligence where they would pick up obedience commands quickly. They would make GREAT agility dogs as they are both very athletic (and did I say tiny? Probably around 30 pounds)

VIOLET #2-13-5 House G…she has been there for over a month. She is a black and white pointer mix. I have skijored with her and I think with time she would figure it out. She is very sweet with people and gets along with other dogs as long as they aren’t around her food. She loves attention and is not high strung or hyper. She does have the kind of high pitched pointer bark but doesn’t use it a lot.

Thanks again to Don and Leslie for always being game to run the shelter dogs. Without their help I couldn’t do al these dogs by myself.
