An acquaintance of mine was running her team yesterday with a loose dog
running along. The loose dog stepped in a foot-hold trap off the trail,
leading to a chain reaction. Thinking that the dog was being attacked by a
wolf or other wild animal, she released several other dogs to go the rescue.
As a result, every loose dog got caught in a trap or snare, compounding the
problem greatly. Fortunately none of her dogs were killed, though a couple
have some minor injuries.
With the recent wolf scare, every would-be "wolfer" in the area is setting
out as much heavy steel and cable as s/he owns. Like it or not, trappers
have as much right to access public lands as do we, and it isn't the
trapper's fault if a loose dog gets caught up in his or her set. It is the
fault of the owner of the dog who allows it run loose in spite of the
borough leash law.
Please, keep your dogs on the trails and don't let your dogs run loose.
Wolves are not the only danger in the woods and traps and snares don't
discriminate between the targeted animals and our dogs.
