Shelter Dogs, May 3

We ran five dogs from the Fairbanks shelter today on the 4 wheeler. This was
a fun group! A huge thanks to Leslie and Lisa for helping to make this fun
for both us and the dogs.

CHEECH #4-24-17 House I
Cheech is a friendly, enthusiastic dog, about six years old and a trained
sleddog. We sure could see that today. He was excited to go and did great
both as a team dog and when we put him up front. As a leader he was all
business and did a great job, and he gets along fine with other dogs. In his
excitement he nibbled on the lines, but in the right hands I bet he could be
taught to resist the urge.

HARLEY #4-24-18 House D
Harley is a young boy, about 10 months old. His youth shined through today,
as he was initially hesitant to go and turned around trying to figure things
out. But he picked up on the whole sleddog thing very quickly and soon was
working hard, and kept his line tight most of the time. We got into a bit of
a tangle at the turn (not his fault), and he stayed calm as we got
everything sorted out. He's a little shy, but warms up quickly with
affection. This boy shows lots of promise.

KHABA #4-23-5 House B
Khaba was all business right from the start. She is rather shy, but so
sweet, and a hard worker. She was tight on the lead the whole time. We had
so many dogs today do great in lead, and Khaba was one of the best. She's
fairly young and would make a fine addition to a rec team. The pictures on
the shelter Web site show her being shy, but she is a beautiful dog.

LINDA #4-24-13 House J
Linda did a fine job of wiggling and crawling her way into our hearts. She
is a beautiful, sweet dog, who did great today in the team. We tried her in
lead and she wanted to chart her own course, but pulled well when back as a
team dog. She has lived both indoors and out, which explains her love of
belly rubs. Linda was excited to go and kept her line tight the whole time.

QUINTUK
Quintuk, or "Quinn" for short, is an enthusiastic sleddog. He was one of
today's stars, a hard worker. We put him in lead and he did great, very
focused. This boy rocks! Quintuk's previous owner turned him in because he
was fighting with other pups in the kennel. But we didn't see any signs of
aggression. We had him chained at the truck next to other dogs, and he ran
next to both males and females today. Leslie has never seen any aggression
at the shelter either, he's just a sweet boy who loves to run. His previous
owner also said he was a great sleddog, and we saw evidence of that today.

We didn't run her again today, but GINGER #3-26-2, who we ran and Carol
wrote about back on April 4, is still at the shelter.
