Rather than eliminating material from the CD, would it be possible to use one of the public domain compression programs to allow us to distribute all of the candidate material? It would be polite to include the decompression program on the CD, so we would need to budget space accordingly. Just a thought.

How about a few of the larger files... Don't we have an english dictionary that might be of use to people who have english as a second or third language? Well, after filtering out the 7-bit texts, and every exclusively English title, we are left with a CD which is only half full. Since this disc will inevitably be copied hundreds or thousands of times, it seems like a criminal waste of media not to fill it all the way up. The question is, what else do we want to include? ready to start work on CD

Now that the work flow system is online and seems to be running smoothly, I'm ready to start work on compiling new CD and DVD images. However, I can't do it alone. I'm going to need some help with the design of the html pages and with proofing the final production. As soon as someone comes forward, we can get started. It won't take much. We really only need a main page, and a template for the title and author index. Someone good with html could probably do it in about an hour, tops. Any takers? the new CD/DVD work flow system

I'm happy to announce that we are finally online for real. You can now login and check out CD and DVD requests to fulfill. The system is now up at http://www.gutenberg.org/cgi-bin/cdproject/dvdlogin.cgi Since we are now much more automated, I would like to encourage all of you to check out fewer requests at a time. Please try to only check out what you feel you can mail in the next few days or so. Don't get me wrong, if you want to check out a hundred at a time, that's totally fine, just make sure that you will be able to mail them within a few days. In short, try to check out fewer requests more frequently. Also, after you have mailed the discs, be sure to check them in as completed ASAP so that the system can send the E-mail to each of the recipients, telling them that their package is on the way. If any of the requests are returned to you as undeliverable or do not have a complete address, check them in as not completable. If any need to be brought to my attention, click on the persons name and check the box which flags them for administrative attention. All in all the interface should be pretty easy to understand, but if you do have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Also, if you are one of the few who hasn't requested a user name and password, please Email me directly. Thanks again to all of you for your help in this great endeavor. Workflow system and foreign language CD

The workflow system is nearly ready to go live. If you intend to mail CDs and DVDs for us, you will need to contact me for an account if you haven't already. If you have, don't worry, it won't change when we go live. Next week, assuming everything goes smoothly with the workflow system, I'd like to work on producing the foreign language CD. I'm going to need someone who can write simple but visually pleasing and most of all valid HTML to come up with the CD design. We're not going to need much, just a couple introductory pages and a basic layout for the title, authors, and languages index. You can even use the August 2003 CD as a starting point. Should we try to translate the html pages into different languages, or simply leave them in English? I don't know how many people we have on the list who speak a language other than English well enough to do it, but if we decide to go ahead, I could probably sign up for doing the Spanish translation. My wife is from Guatemala, so that wouldn't be a problem. We are probably going to end up with some extra space on the disc, so we should also be thinking about what else we might include. Perhaps we can fill it out with the top 100. Thoughts? automated work flow system

I've got about 75% of the work flow system up and operational. I now just need to code the final 25% and squash the few bugs that I'm sure still exist. Enough of the system is, however, in place to enable people to start poking around and telling me what doesn't work and what needs to be changed. If you'd like to help test the system or plan on starting/continuing to mail out discs for us, then you'll need a login and password. To set one up, please E-mail me off list and tell me what password you'd like to use. I'll also need your name, if it's not obvious from your message. Your login will not change when the real system comes online, so you only have to set it up once. I probably don't need to tell you, but just in case... The system is not secure, so it's probably not a good idea to use your Paypal password. Currently the system will allow you to view the queue, check out requests, check them in as completed, not completable, return them to queue for someone else to complete, ETC. You can also filter the results based on the type of request (CD or DVD) and filter out requests that aren't from specific countries. The longest part of building the system (as with most systems) was getting the foundation worked out and in place. Now that that is done, new features can come more quickly. The other 25% that I will be putting in place over the next two days or so include things like allowing you to download your checked out requests in a spreadsheet format, add comments to problematic requests, automatic E-mailing of recipients when their requests are checked in as complete, and anything else you all happen to come up with. I also plan on adding statistics. It's not a high priority, but I do, like many other people, enjoy stats. :) Don't worry about playing hard on the system. It's only connected to a test database so if you break it, no harm done. Also, don't actually fulfill any of the requests you may see on the system. Like I said, it's just a test and we won't be keeping track. I realize the web design won't be winning any awards, but as long as it's functional, I'm happy. However, if you do have any simple html suggestions which would help things to look a little nicer, please don't hesitate to pass them along. However, please be specific as to exactly how something should be changed, including the html code. Sorry. It's just that html has never been my thing. Dear Mr. Parker, Thanks for your offer to help with the DVD. I'm sorry for the problems you had with it but I'm glad you were able to fix them. We're always interested in posting improved versions of our releases, and I'm certain that this will be no exception. I'm CCing Greg Newby, as he is generally the person who makes most decisions regarding updates of this kind. We will soon be creating a new set of disc images and your feedback is invaluable.
