I know we've discussed this on gutvol-d, but I don't know if it's come up on this list. I'm wondering what everyone else is doing to label their discs? Are you just writing on each one? Have you tried CD labels? Does anyone have any experience with labeling discs and can offer some tips? The only ideas I have had were to use a rubber stamp or a printed adhesive label, although I've heard that some of the adhesive labels can warp the discs over time. Printing on the actual discs doesn't seem to be an option either, at least not on our budget. I use an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie marker. The Fine Point ones don't work well for my handwriting. -----Original Message----- From: dvdvol-bounces@lists.pglaf.org [mailto:dvdvol-bounces@lists.pglaf.org] On Behalf Of Aaron Cannon Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 10:13 PM To: dvdvol@lists.pglaf.org Subject: [dvdvol] cd labeling I know we've discussed this on gutvol-d, but I don't know if it's come up on this list. German computer magazine c't tested commercial labels for DVDs. The outcome is: *all* labels warp the DVDs and put them out of spec, making them less readable or unreadable. CD labels are ok, because the CD specs are more tolerant towards misshapen CDs. -- Marcello Perathoner webmaster@gutenberg.org
Friendswood, TX USA 06/03/02005 Dear fellow volunteers, I haven't marked mine at all! Though I have bought a $14.99 Memorex DVD stamper on sale last weekend for $ 4.99. And the DVD, I bought are "ink-jet" printable, so how does one do that? Do you put the DVD through an ink-ject printer? Have a blessed day! There are specific ink-jet printers designed to print on CD or DVD media. A quick Google leads me to believe that the Epson Stylus Photo R200 is one of these printers. There are others, including some that are designed just to on media and not on paper at all. -----Original Message----- From: dvdvol-bounces@lists.pglaf.org [mailto:dvdvol-bounces@lists.pglaf.org] On Behalf Of Sam Chacko Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 6:40 AM To: CD and DVD Volunteers Subject: Re: [dvdvol] cd labeling Friendswood, TX USA 06/03/02005 Dear fellow volunteers, I haven't marked mine at all! Aaron, I have been using Avery 8694 clear and 8692 white matte CD/DVD labels. I have noticed some air bubbles under the clear labels but no problems with the white labels. There are usually 20 sheets in a pack with 2 labels per sheet and the cost per pack varies from around $17 USD for white to $24 USD for clear. This adds approximately $.50 USD to the cost of producing each disc and since we normally ship 2 discs to each recipient, a dollar is spent on a label that might go to mailing expenses. However, having generally been acknowledged by my teachers and colleagues over the years as having the worst handwriting on the planet, labelling is much better for my purposes. An alternative might be to label the case that we ship the cd or dvd in and let the recipient label the disc, should they choose to do so. I found some labels at shop4tech for $14 for 100. http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?go=view_item&id=1556&cata=&s_cata= You might also look at getting a 1" x 2" stamp from iprint: http://www.iprint.com Granted, they're not nearly as nice as a label, but they only cost about $20. Or you can just keep doing what works for you. Do you have a nice label design that you are using that you wouldn't mind sharing, or is it just the standard "Project Gutenberg DVD"? I believe we've still got the photoshop design for the manufactured DVDs from last year, but we don't have anything for the CDs. The primary reason I'm interested in coming up with a nice way to label our discs is because, in the future, after we create the updated DVD, I would like to see us start doing some promotion to schools and libraries, and it is doubtful that they will be too interested in a hand-written disc. However, if we could get the disc labeled semi-nicely, put it in decent packaging, and possibly even tag it with an ISBN, barcode, and LOC catalog data, we would probably have quite a bit of success getting it in to libraries and the like. If we did decide to go ahead with something like this, another option would be to purchase preprinted DVDs. I wouldn't recommend that for the standard request fulfillment project, as it's too expensive. Thoughts? Sincerely Aaron Cannon At 07:01 AM 6/3/2005, you wrote:
