I could easily code a workflow system for the CD project: a public "order" form and some private forms that would display the pending orders in a table and allow the volunteers to grab some off of the top. Coordination would be easier because the system would keep track of who grabbed which orders and of the status of the orders. Furthermore we could split the orders into regions, so the European volunteers would see only orders for Europe etc. -- Marcello Perathoner webmaster@gutenberg.org
Thanks. I'm actually working on such a system as we speak. I code a bit slow, but I hope to have a working system up by the middle of this week or sooner. In fact, the groundwork for the system is already in place and taking orders. The final system should incorporate all the features you mentioned and more. However, if you are ok with it, perhaps you might consider coding something to distribute the work of adding subject data to the catalog, unless something already exists for this. Should we issue a call for volunteers for this project? While we've got people working on the catalog, are there other improvements that could be made by a distributed effort? There is a web interface to the catalog and a group of volunteers working on the catalog but updating subject data is not one of their top priorities right now. There are a lot of errors to fix first and many other informations are missing too. But, in due time, subject data will be fixed. I propose to use what data is in the catalog now. "Language", "Category" , "File Type" and "Top 100" are very reliable. So we could build a "Foreign Languages", "Human Read Audio Books", "Illustrated Works" or "Best Of" CD. Of course, having many different CD types, we will have to ship more CDs. So better make sure we have the resources. -- Marcello Perathoner webmaster@gutenberg.org

Sounds good to me, saves a lot of manhours sending the stuff out. Now, if the table was easy to import into say word or excel that would save me having to reformat the addresses for the mailing labels. Just need a definition of "europe". It just so happens that from France anywhere in the CE is the same postal rate, so if I just got to send to CE that would make life _really_ simple
