Dear GutVol-D, Thank you everyone for spreading the word about the new Self.Gutenberg.orgsite. The site has gotten off to a great start. For the first month have had about 100 new books published. We have received an average of about 3 new submissions for publication a day. My guess is about half of them were non-English books. I was pleasantly surprised that so many were International languages. We will be adjusting the site accordingly, and adding a Sort by Language option on the Advanced Search page. The most popular Categories for July's submissions was Education and Poetry. If anyone would like to help out with the Self.Gutenberg.org site, we could use some help with making comments and reviews for books on the site. Thank you again for every ones help. greg- thank you for the quick response. :+) and i apologize for my lack of proper jargon, since i don't want to mount a "mirror", per se, but merely _some_ of the many files available. specifically, i would copy the *.txt files and the graphics, and only -- for now -- english books. (although that last condition might be difficult.) i now understand that i should be using rsync, rather than curl or wget, and i will do just that. if it is easy enough that someone just tells me how to have rsync get that subset, many thanks. otherwise i will go and read the fucking manual. -bowerbird

at some point, for what i am sure must be some kind of good reason, it become impossible to wget a file from the gutenberg.org website... instead, one is told that the project is intended for humans, not robots. this is devastating to researchers -- who just happen to be human beings who need systematic access via code. i would be willing to mount a mirror on my personal account at my i.s.p., to restore free and unhindered access to these books in the public domain... so if you'd "whitelist" me for one-time access to curl all of the files, i would appreciate it very much... thank you... -bowerbird

Dear D-List, Self.Gutenberg.org just got its first press release, http://newsbreaks.infotoday.com/NewsBreaks/Project-Gutenberg-Launches-Repos… . The interview was done by Barbara Quint from Information Today. I was really worried about it because it was a phone interview and not a questions first email. Mike often mentioned that he would never do an interview on the phone again and only by email. With phone interviews, he was too often mis-quoted and the piece would be incorrectly slanted. The only reason I agreed to do it on the phone was because Barbara was a long time PG friend and volunteer. Luckily the article turned out ok. Check it out and let me know what you think of it. I just found out about Redium, which is an IDPF reference system for rendering EPUB onto HTML, apparently. Looks like it could be an interesting basis for an EPUB to HTML converter, for example. Or other tools. http://readium.org/

declaration of independence

let us remember, today, that project gutenberg started off with the declaration of independence, and that it itself _was_ indeed such a declaration. michael's idea was that we didn't need anybody else. no big companies... no grants... no "deep pockets"... just one copy of one book, and a keyboard to type on. hallelujah, mr. hart. thank you for opening our eyes... *** i developed my "zero markup language" _for_ p.g. i knew it had ramifications far beyond this project, but i didn't care all that much, not for a long time. alas, due to a bunch of idiots here (you know who you are, and so does everybody else), the interest in using my system here wasn't allowed to blossom. so all of my fruit just sat there, unused, on the vine. as of today, however, i hereby declare my independence. i'll be taking my work wide, and leaving p.g. far behind. we'll see if the world is smarter than your small minds... i'll monitor this list, and remind you, from time to time, how stupid you were to ignore what i had to teach you, so we are not, by any stretch of imagination, "through". but we're most definitely now _independent_, thank you. have a nice day. enjoy the fireworks. -bowerbird p.s. free at last, free at last, thank god almighty, i'm free at last.

forty thousand

so, i see p.g. hit number _forty_thousand_ about 10 days back... a volume entitled "extinct birds", from 1907, cataloging species that became extinct "within the last six or seven hundred years". fitting, since the goners will likely triple in the next 6 or 7 years. anyway... i'll still call it 30,000 for a while, because of non-books and dups, but 30,000 is a good number for volunteers to have accomplished. so congratulations and thanks to all the folks who worked so hard. it's too bad that e-books never caught on with the public, so that project gutenberg could've gotten all the credit that it deserved... oh, wait... that's right... the boat _did_ sail, but p.g. _missed_it_, because everyone here was lingering at the x.m.l. dock instead... oh well, i'm sure you'll get it all sorted out, sooner or later, eh? -bowerbird
