i recently rewrapped the p.g. version of "pride and prejudice"
to the linebreaks from a scan-set of that book on archive.org.

>    http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/1342/pg1342.txt
>    http://www.archive.org/details/prideprejudiceno00austuoft

this allowed me to easily compare the o.c.r. from the scan-set
to the p.g. e-text.  that comparison confirms that the two texts
are from different _editions_ of the book, as carlo had indicated.

most of the changes appear to be the type an editor would make
-- transpositions, grammar, spellings, punctuation, and so on --
although i suppose it's possible some were made by the author...

i have appended a list of 858 of these changes, all of which
involve some kind of change to the text of the line, ignoring
punctuation and spelling (visitor/visiter, judgement/judgment).

(actually, it looks like i can only send the first 200 of 'em.
but that's probably more than enough to give you the flavor.)

***

checking these diffs against the scans would give rather good
assurance that the corrected o.c.r. was adequately accurate...
that is, if there _are_ errors, they are probably shown here.

there were only a few places where edits were so large that
they caused even a minor problem for this line-diff method.

***

and this illustrates how somebody -- even your competitor --
could use a p.g. text to create their own more-accurate text,
one that was linked with a scan-set and thus had provenance.

if you let a competitor do this, before you do it yourself,
you are allowing yourself to be upstaged in the marketplace.
