Bowerbird, If you check the link I gave you you'll see what I'm up against. Lots of ASCII-art trees, LOTS of accents to add (which is why I use JEdit, because it has a nice plugin for UTF-8 characters), lots of chapters and subsections. Not too many footnotes so far, but that could change. At least one table, and it's a big one. That's another thing to consider: tables. Easy to do in HTML, not so in text. I'm using archive.org's text file and I use Jedit and guiguts to get it in shape, one page at a time.
well, with those tools, it might take a long time.
but if you instead use a system i'll build for you, you could whip the book out before you know it.
but i won't get to it until after christmas...
