I am no programmer, but as far as I can understand, this is simple in principle but almost impossible in practice.

Books are complex beasts, and not always easy to typeset or encode. Sometimes you will need the full complexity as a monster like TEI. However, I still believe in that old scientific adagio: make it as simple as possible, but not simpler. Jeroen.
