the old hands will remember that project gutenberg was born on the fourth of july, when a grocery bag with the declaration of independence printed on it was handed to michael hart, which prompted him to enter it into a computer system and then send it to some of the other people on that system, giving him the idea that books could be distributed like this. in 1971, that took a lot of foresight. thank you, michael. now project gutenberg is approaching 50,000 items, with distributed proofreaders kicking in 30,000 of 'em. happy birthday, project gutenberg. rest in peace, michael hart... -bowerbird
