The whole point is that I want to be able to read without being distracted by page numbers. Which is why traditionally books stick them way way up there at the top corners where your eyes don't see them unless you really really go looking for them. On my ebook reader the progress meter (think page numbers) automatically hides itself unless I explicitly ask it where I am in the book.
