Does anyone think this is a markup we're likely to get DP proofers to adopt?
There's a lot of markup for not much text - low signal/noise ratio.
A lot of generic tags:
<item>...</item> type stuff that's not encouraging.

Is this a real candidate?

Did you try the Oxford text archive, http://ota.ahds.ac.uk/ ? What
they call XML is TEI, 2506 of them. I have seen many more from other
sources.
