In Pisa, there is an institute of computational linguistics, http://www.ilc.cnr.it/ who originated from a research group of the national univerity computing center in 1967. I think that there has been work even earlier, probably 1965, and I remember that they began with the input of Dante's Commedia and the creation of concordances.
