I'd love to see you try ... I'd love even more to see you succeed, because the way its implemented now is a non-optimal solution.
Basically your proposal has following advantages over mine:
wrong on all counts. but everyone else can see that for themselves, so i won't bother with the redundancy of setting the record straight...

if you split the cover page stream where do you put the spine?
at the end, of course. its name should sort to the very bottom. because it exists outside the linear sequence of the bound pages.
Why at the bottom? The first thing you see of a book, even before you take it down the shelf, is its spine. So it should sort at the very top. -- Marcello Perathoner webmaster@gutenberg.org
