Given how many scanners I see for nearly free at garage sales every single year, with OCR programs, it's pretty expensive, especially as you still have to have your own scanner to make the files to send them. That would be way more expensive then buying the program for any person uploading material to DP. If you're doing little enough material for PG that you might consider using that, you can find users willing to help OCR. -- Kie ekzistas vivo, ekzistas espero.
Actually, I always was a scanner freak, but since I got a halfway decent digital camera (12 MP, but for a lot of OCR purposes 8MP or less is fine), I have hardly used my A4 scanner, which has been sitting on my shelf looking reproachful. Quick shots, such as when I am shooting a whole book, are not pretty, but they OCR at least as well as scanner shots, and they can be a lot less damaging to the original than the scanner can. After very gratifyingly using the cut-down Omnipage that came with my scanner, I got an Omnipage Pro for $100 on a special a year or two later, and it offers camera input, though it seems to work as well elsewise, but why should I complain? I must add that I don't understand why the cameras don't offer an OCR package as well. For fussier shots one simply takes more trouble with the setup; so what else is new? Am I in the minority here?
