that's only natural at first.
Bottlenecks are developing, as we expected between some of the rounds. But, the material that gets through the process is of much higher quality and is making the jobs of the post-processors much easier.
that's great to hear, since a big part of the intent was to address the backlog in the post-processing queue... maybe some volunteers here who tried d.p. and maybe didn't like it too much before will go back and give it a new shot... thanks for the report. i'm glad to hear it's going so well! :+) -bowerbird

Their page is loading OK now, but is 2 years+ outdated. Maybe they had a systems crash? Let's give them another day or two to recover, and if nothing is fixed we'll remove them from the mirror list. -- Greg

If their site has not been updated for over two years, I doubt waiting will help. Either nudge them into action or remove them from the list, I'd say. -- branko collin collin@xs4all.nl

Actually, I think what Greg was refering to was the fact that they might not have gotten around to redownloading the site. They may just be running from old backups. Has anyone e-mailed them to see what's up? Aaron Cannon At 11:33 AM 7/12/2005, you wrote:

While searching for my name, my wife came across some interesting abuse of Gutenberg Etexts to mislead the Google search engine. Just search in Google for "jeroen hellingman gay interracial" and compare the landing page with the page actually kept in the google cache. WARNING: male frontal nude pictures! I reported this abuse (cloaking) to Google, but don't know how effective that will be. This may probably also happen to other volunteers who have their names appear in Gutenberg texts. I have also already seen snippets of Gutenberg texts in spam email messages. Jeroen.

Wow Jeroen! Which one is you? This is a known SEO (Search Engine `Optimization') technique. Google ranks according to "search word frequency" in the page. The frequency must not be too high, otherwise the google engine will treat you as spammer. Thus spammers have begun filling in some alien text to reduce the frequency to acceptable levels. So, where do you get some public domain text to do this? This spammer is targeting "gay interracial porn picture". If you google for that, you'll see that s/he isn't doing a very good job of it, because the site doesn't turn up in the first 50 hits. -- Marcello Perathoner webmaster@gutenberg.org

While I would say that this is unethical, my first thought is that I doubt it would be illegal. Doesn't the "small print" say that if you remove the PG trademark, you can use the text in any way you desire? In this instance, do they actually have any reference to PG? Andrew

Wikipedia. And so my contributions to the entry about REBOL have become "Slut wife porn story". Ah well, I guess it will weed out the dumber employers down the line if ever I decide to get a job. -- branko collin collin@xs4all.nl

Actually, this is abuse of SEO, not SEO itself. Proper SEO techniques are a legitimate way to promote your website or business. This is just cloaking and pure abuse of SEO. David A. Desrosiers desrod@gnu-designs.com http://gnu-designs.com

Isn't this a blatant violation of the PG trademark? There's not much legal issue with them just using the text, but certainly one with misusing the PG trademark. There may also be an issue with them using our names...at least I *hope* there is! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
