I wanted to bring to your attention a proposal for a Wikimedia grant on which I am a coauthor. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/PlanetMath_Books_Project If successful, it would help improve technology for retrodigitizing math books. Given the considerable collective knowledge of this listserver on this topic, suggestions and comments would be welcome. Raymond Puzio

RP> Raymond Puzio While the proposal is technically interesting, I am rather skeptical on the outcome of the retrodigitation, because of the existing copyright laws. Every textbook that might be worth digitizing is under copyright and will be in copyright maybe for a century from now. Authors have probably transferred the copyright to publishers, so even authors willing to cooperate cannot. And most of the recent textbooks have already LaTeX sources. Much more can be hoped by the diffusion of teaching material with free licences, through the diffusion of a culture of sharing. Carlo Traverso
