CANADIAN PROJECT AIMS TO COORDINATE DISPARATE EFFORTS

A new initiative called AlouetteCanada is designed to bring together disparate digitization efforts from around Canada into a single online location. Many universities and museums in the country maintain small-scale digitization efforts of material relevant to the history and culture of Canada. Much of this content is inaccessible to most people, however, according to Carole Moore, chief librarian of the University of Toronto, one of the universities participating in AlouetteCanada. The University of Alberta and the University of Brunswick are also part of the project, and Moore said hundreds of other organizations could conceivably contribute material. Ernie Ingles, chief librarian at the University of Alberta, said AlouetteCanada is, in some ways, the antithesis of Google's book-scanning project. Although Google is making content available publicly, he said, "it is making that content available in a commercial way." Regarding the website up for new management: Why? What's wrong with it? How come it didn't take off? I didn't even know that there was a Canadian Gutenberg site although I remember that there was supposed to be one set up at one time. What is involved with this site? What would I have to do? If I decide to take it over, will it cost me any money? I'm on a limited income but I wouldn't mind the challenge of taking care of a Gutenberg website. I think that it is a fine thing that you do and I have taken advantage of downloading quite a few books over the years. If I'm not too late, would it be possible to get an answer? Jennifer Zickerman allocated this domain and had me host a test site, which never got off the ground. If anyone else is wanting to take over the domain, let me know. It has expired, but there is a grace period between when it is disabled and when it is released for the SPAM/Porn companies to allocate it for their own uses. French judge authorizes downloading and uploading of copyrighted content on the Internet February 7, 2006 Paris, France--An Internet user defended by the Association of Audionautes (ADA) was released free of charges by the District Court of Paris after downloading and uploading music and movies on the Internet. The decision, dated December 8, 2005 and made public this week, is available online at: http://www.juriscom.net/documents/tgiparis20051208.pdf Several Internet users defended by the ADA have already been released free of charges for having downloaded copyrighted content on Internet on the basis of the "private copying" doctrine: - Rodez Tribunal Correctionnel, October 13, 2004: Absolved of charges - Châteauroux Tribunal de Grande Instance, December 15, 2004: No damages - Montpellier Cour d'Appel, March 10, 2005: Absolved of charges - Meaux Tribunal Correctionnel, April 21, 2005: Downloading qualified as private copying, 70 cents / title for uploading - Le Havre Tribunal Grande Instance, September 20, 2005: Same as above, but 20 cents / title for uploading - Créteil Tribunal de Grande Instance, November 2, 2005: Absolved of charges for downloading as well as uploading using eMule But this decision is the first one to authorize both the downloading and uploading of P2P content for Internet users. On September 21, 2004, the prosecutor's office found 1875 MP3 and DIVX files on the defendant's hard drive. Based on this discovery, a French record producer association known as the SCPP (Société Civile des Producteurs Phonographiques) sued him for downloading and uploading 1212 music tracks. The District Court of Paris, however, refused to agree with the SCPP's argument. Following the line of reasoning utilized by the ADA for nearly two years, the Judges decided that these acts of downloading and uploading qualified as "private copying." While the case has been appealed to a higher court, Aziz Ridouan, President of the ADA approves of the current verdict and is confident that it will be affirmed. According to Jean-Baptiste Soufron, Legal Counsel of the ADA, "This most recent decision is consistent with the definitive decision of the French Appellate Court of Montpellier. It is an important stepping stone in our fight to legalize P2P." France was the first country in the world to propose the legalization of P2P downloading to Parliament. I happened to hear Hugh McGuire interviewed on CBC Radio One yesterday. He was talking about an interesting project that I hadn't previously known. I though I'd mention it here in case anyone else is interested: http://www.librivox.org/ LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain, and then we release the audio files back onto the net (podcast and catalog). Our objective is to make all books in the public domain available, for free, in audio format on the internet. The likely new advocate in the Liberal party for extending copyright protection is Diane Marleau, member for Sudbury, who is an advocate for the drug industry. The Conservatives will likely be sympathetic to the issue. But there is unlikely to be any movement on the copyright issue. Parliament is divided between four parties. Although the Conservatives have the most seats and will form the government they do not have a majority. They will have to tread very carefully to stay in power. No controversial issues will be introduced. But all Canadians who are interested in the issue should pay attention. Most members of parliament are unlikely to know much about the topic and something may sneak through. http://www.gutenbergcanada.org Pretty raw, as you see, but we can upload, categorize, browse and search for texts. The site is powered by Drupal, an open-source content management system. It's very easy to do most administrative tasks, like write content, upload files, add new categories, etc. I'd like volunteers to take over: - PG Canada organizational content: We need content similar to Project Gutenberg - who we are, how to contact us, terms of use, etc. - Site styling: It's ugly. But it's just simple CSS, no rocket science, so anybody with an eye for design and a little CSS knowledge can handle it. - Content management: It's very simple to upload content, create categories, etc. I'd like someone else to manage that effort. - PHP scripting: There are lots of places where a little PHP coding would make the site experience a lot nicer. - Logo: Gardner, could you make a version with a transparent background please?
