In 1822 the Bishop of Clogher, Ireland, was observed attempting sex with a soldier in the back room of a public house in London. Both were dragged, semi-naked, through the streets in the subsequent uproar. However, the writer of the pamphlet was much more concerned that the establishment covered up the whole thing, whilst still lecturing on morality. The Self-Plumbed Bishop Unplumed, by T. Latham 58052 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/0/5/58052 ] [Files: 58052-0.txt; 58052-h.htm] For those wishing to know: the Rev. Thomas Latham (c1772-1830), an independant minister, didn't believe in endless suffering for those not converting to his religion, had been taken to task in a pamphlet about it, and this is his reply. The first half is rather humourous but after a while it gets down to lots of bible quotations etc. I transcribed it as I think this T. Latham might be the same person who wrote Rod in Pickle which was released last week: very different style etc. though. All the best, David, England with blue skies and sunshine

Consolation in Life and Death, by John Church 58048 [Subtitle: derived from the Life of Christ] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/0/4/58048 ] [Files: 58048-0.txt; 58048-h.htm] For those wishing to know: a funeral sermon preached by John Church (c1780-1826?) in 1819 when one of his congregation, Mrs. Turner, died. Despite the title it's nothing to do with the actual life of Christ, but instead some fairly abstract theological points, together with points about Mrs. Turner's death. What's interesting is the hymn at the end is signed "J. C. jun." - presumably John Church's son? All the best, David, Rainy England
