The Sabbath, the Crystal Palace, and the People, by James Baldwin Brown 62202 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/2/0/62202 ] [Files: 62202-0.txt; 62202-h.htm] For those wishing to know: probably published 1852, as the British Government was minded to let the Crystal Palace open on Sunday afternoons, and there was great opposition from religious groups, this pamphlet by a minister from the area, argues that something out to be done for the working classes, as they had no interest in going to church and the existing Sabbath laws resulted in near imprisonment to spite them. Sabbath Defence Tactics, by James Bridges 62200 [Subtitle: a manual] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/2/0/62200 ] [Files: 62200-0.txt; 62200-h.htm] For those wishing to know: published in 1849 to help the Lord's Day Observance Society (a group dedicated to keeping Sunday religious) this very surprizing work shows how to infiltrate the newly expanding railway companies, disrupt their shareholder meetings, in order to try and stop trains running on Sundays. Detailed instructions are given and past experiences related. It reads like a modern day activist manual, not something from 170 years ago. A Letter to the Right Honourable the Earl of Derby, by Benjamin Parsons 62197 [Subtitle: on the cruelty and injustice of opening the Crystal Palace on the Sabbath] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/1/9/62197 ] [Files: 62197-0.txt; 62197-h.htm] For those wishing to know: in 1852 the Earl of Derby was the Prime Minister of England and the Crystal Palace had opened to great crowds in south London. In proposing to open the Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoons for the poorer folk who were unable to see it, the Earl was attacked by the religious folk, and this pamphlet is a typical example. Rev. Parsons insists he only cares about the welfare of people, and says Sunday opening is terrible. However, at the end he says that middle-class people won't go to churches in the morning, but would take a day of pleasure and rest instead. Perhaps that was really the reason as he didn't seem to care much about the welfare of folk in the rest of his life. All the best, David, Very windy England

The title does turn up in the second series of the Religious Tract Society's tracts, but this edition isn't by them, so may have been one that they simply added, or a pirated version from the RTS one. It gives brief accounts of the death of believers and non-believers, but seems aimed at the middle classes, definately not the working class ones, which I'd have thought were the target for such tracts.
