The Truth about Church Extension, by Anonymous 64878 [Subtitle: An exposure of certain fallacies and misstatements contained in the census reports] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/8/7/64878 ] [Files: 64878-h.txt; 64878-h.htm] For those wishing to know: in 1851 the UK carried out a religious census to find out how many people were in religious services on 30 March 1851. The results shocked many and showed dissenters were fast catching up the Church of England. This pamphlet argues the results were skewed against the Church of England, puts forwards different ideas, and recalculates to show the Church of England was doing excellently. The writer was very pro-Church of England... All the best, David, Overcast England

The Church and the Census, by James Skinner 64877 [Subtitle: A Tract for the Times] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/8/7/64877 ] [Files: 64877-0.txt; 64877-h.htm] For those wishing to know: when the 1861 census was coming up in England, there was debate about whether a question asking about a person's religion should be included. Rev. Skinner who was very pro-Church of England, and very anti everyone else, wanted none of it, because it would show the Church of England was losing support and wrote this tract. He condemned the Government for including it. The dissenters got the clause removed, and Rev. James added an appendix conemning the Government for listening to dissenters(!) The Numbering of the People, by George Allen 64876 [Subtitle: A Sermon in conjunction with the census of 1861 preached in St. Thomas' Church, Islington, on Sunday Evening, April 7] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/8/7/64876 ] [Files: 64876-0.txt; 64876-h.htm] For those wishing to know: England has a census every years, and this sermon was preached on the census day for teh 1861 census. He has various thoughts for his congregation in this homely talk, and uses the census as the basis to get people to think how they are living. He also explains why taking the census won't lead to the judgement of God on the nation, apparently something many were worried about. All the best, David, Overcast England PS. Our next census is tomorrow, March 21st.
