The Sacrifice of Life, by John Church 58600 [Subtitle: slain by the twenty-nine instruments of death] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/6/0/58600 ] [Files: 58600-0.txt; 58600-h.htm] For those wishing to know: a rather strange sermon from 1814 from John Church (1780-1833): he picks a phrase in the Old Testament about twenty-nine knifes, says he believes they stand for something, and then lists 29 things. He then has another go without another 29 items. When Church was imprisoned later he said he came up with a new sermon every day, and I think in this case, he was out of ideas. Mind you, a good title. All the best, David, Cold and overcast England

The Devil and Parson Church, by Anonymous 58599 [Subtitle: or, Birds of a feather] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/5/9/58599 ] [Files: 58599-0.txt; 58599-h.htm] For those wishing to know: A 1817 pamphlet about the then famous preacher John Church (1780-1833) published after he'd been found guilty of sexual assault on Adam Foreman, then 17, and before sentence was passed (he'd be jailed for two years). There's some background, which is no doubt the scandal the publisher hoped would sell his pamphlet, and a poem which mercilessly condemns a preacher for the double life he was leading. In it the devil suggests: Where they might each have a taste of fun, With an Adonis or two Well, I'm sure you get the idea. All the best, David, Overcast and cold England
