Facts and Assertions: or a Brief and Plain Exhibition of the Incongruity 58108 [Title: Facts and Assertions: or a Brief and Plain Exhibition of the Incongruity of the Peculiar Doctrines of the Church of Rome] [Author: George Stanley Faber] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/1/0/58108 ] [Files: 58108-0.txt; 58108-h.htm] For those wishing to know: the theology pamphlet from 1831 is fairly typically of the pamphlet wars going on between the Protestants and Catholics. Two years after this pamphlet was published John Keble would give his "National Apostasy" sermon and the Tractarian would bring yet another set of pamphlets into play. Mind you, excellent time to be a pamphlet printer... All the best, David, Dampest England

A Second Letter to the Bishop of Exeter, by Edward Hall Alderson 58106 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/1/0/58106 ] [Files: 58106-0.txt; 58106-h.htm] For those wishing to know: this follows on from Alderson's first letter to the Bishop of Exeter concerning the Gorham case: in this one Alderson takes a different approach than in the previous letter and both letters are interesting for how the Bishop and a leading lawyer are trying to use the law for their own theological ends.. A Letter to the Bishop of Exeter, by Edward Hall Alderson 58105 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/1/0/58105 ] [Files: 58105-0.txt; 58105-h.htm] For those wishing to know: the Bishop of Exeter was determined to get rid of the Rev. Gorham who had objections to "baptising" infants, based on the doctrines of the Church of England. However, things went against the Bishop, and so he consulted a leading lawyer, Sir Edward Hall Alderson, who advised him and wrote this (supposedly) private letter giving options (all this around 1850). Gorham was eventually vindicated but the Bishop persecuted him to his dying day. All the best, David, Dampest England

Observations on Coroners, by William Hewitt 58104 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/1/0/58104 ] [Files: 58104-0.txt; 58104-h.htm] For those wishing to know: William Hewitt (c1805-9 October 1876) was a surgeon in Norfolk who was horified that non-medical people were allowed to be coroners. Here he puts forward cases where a non-medical cononer made an error of judgement which a medical man would not have made. Mis-carriages of justice resulted.
