Eight Sermons on The Priesthood, Altar, and Sacrifice,Mayow Wynell Mayow 49115 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/4/9/1/1/49115 ] [Files: 49115-0.txt; 49115-h.htm] For those wishing to know: Mayow Wynell Mayow was vicar of St. Mary's West Brompton (later known as St. Mary The Boltons) church in Brompton, England, 1869-1868 and these are the sermons he preached for Christmas 1867. They strongly advocate Tractarian principles and Rev. Mayow was eventually to leave St. Mary's due to the controversy these views stoked up. His superior was the Vicar of Brompton, the Rev. William J. Irons, who would have strongly supported the views in this book. A local evangelical clergyman, John Philip Gell, wrote a short critical of Mayow's book (shortly to be released in Gutenberg). All the best, David, England, dark but still warm

On the Apostolical Succession, by William J. Irons 49114 [Subtitle: Parochial Lectures (Second Series)] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/4/9/1/1/49114 ] [Files: 49114-0.txt; 49114-h.htm] For those wishing to know: Rev. William J(oseph) Irons was Vicar of Holy Trinity, Brompton, England, and gave these lectures around 1847. Apostolical Succession is the idea that Jesus Christ appointed and empowered his early disciples to run the church, and that they, and only they, could pass on that appointment and special powers. He argues that the Church of England Bishops are valid Apostolical Successors and the non-conformist groups (Baptist, Methodist etc.) are not and their ministers lack key powers. This is 100% Tractarian stuff! All the best, David, England, still warm, but the wind is dying down

Is the Vicar of Brompton a Tractarian?, by Arthur Ellis 49113 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/4/9/1/1/49113 ] [Files: 49113-0.txt; 49113-h.htm For those wishing to know: Arthur Ellis was a parishioner in Brompton, England, around 1855 when Dr. William J. Irons was vicar of Holy Trinity, Brompton. Whilst Irons denied being a Tractarian, he was most certainly heavily influenced by the Tractarian movement and personal friends with some of the movement's leaders. Ellis wished to expose this and published this short tract. I'd like to stress that the current Vicar of Holy Trinity, Brompton, is a very well-known man in English church circles and he's certainly NOT a Tractarian - the book being 160 years out of date! All the best, David, Windy but warm England

National Apostasy, by John Keble 49112 [Subtitle: Considered in a Sermon Preached in St. Mary's, Oxford] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/4/9/1/1/49112 ] [Files: 49112-0.txt; 49112-h.htm] For those wishing to know: this sermon, preached 14 July 1833 marks the start of the Oxford Tractarian movement which caused major issues for the Church of England for the next sixty years - with the effects still here today. The sermon itself isn't much, but it lead to The Tracts for the Times being written, and it was these that caused the heated debate. All the best, David, Windy but warm England
