My link goes through a warning page, since I've not yet seen evidence that satisfies me that it's public domain here in the US. Wallace was British, and lived until 1932, so I believe his works would still have been under copyright in 1996, when the GATT copyright restorations went into effect.
Good question. My clearance data (key 20071017073446wallace, for internal reference) said 1920, but the page images don't actually have a date.

Note that the book doesn't indicate a non-US publication, so we could have cleared under either rule 5 (no copyright notice) or rule 1 (pre-1923, if that is supported). In the case where GATT might apply, we can and sometimes do miss such things when there is no indication of a non-US publication.
Based on your research about non-US origination, if we can't support the pre-1923 publication date, we'll need to pull it. -- Greg
It's possible that the book was pulished in the US within the 30 day window necessary to avoid copyright restoration, but I haven't seen any evidence yet for this. If PG does have more evidence that the book is now in the public domain, please let me know.
