Ryles (1816-1900) was a leading evangelical Anglican and he wrote a great number of theological tracts, aimed at the church-goer, of which this is one, published 1851. In many ways it seems like the sort of stuff that's handed out today and so provides an insight into strands of Anglicanism in the mid-19th century. The subtitle is of course a dig at the ritualist branch of the church. All the best, David, England - overcast and quiet
