Sorry to "butt in"--if it appears that pre-1923 cannot be established, and the book needs to be pulled from PG-INT, why not consider moving it to PGC. I checked Wallace, and he clearly died before 1958, so there'd be no copyright problem in Canada.
I'm currently linking to a copy at Freeread Australia that's linked to from Gutenberg Australia. My link goes through a warning page, since I've not yet seen evidence that satisfies me that it's public domain here in the US. If anyone does demonstrate its public domain status here in the US, let me know. (I see that #26659 is still on the Gutenberg site, so maybe someone did and I didn't hear about it. For now, I don't link to this copy, but would be happy to if it were shown to be PD here.) Thanks! John

Does this one actually clear copyright? The earliest copy I can find of this one is a London edition from 1929. This copy doesn't have a date on it, but the earliest American edition I can find with a date is dated 1930.
Wallace was British, and lived until 1932, so I believe his works would still have been under copyright in 1996, when the GATT copyright restorations went into effect.
Good question. My clearance data (key 20071017073446wallace, for internal reference) said 1920, but the page images don't actually have a date.
I'm cc'ing Alexander, to see what further detail exists.
I'm also attaching the page images, for your review: "The Country Life Press, Garden City N.Y."
Note that the book doesn't indicate a non-US publication, so we could have cleared under either rule 5 (no copyright notice) or rule 1 (pre-1923, if that is supported). In the case where GATT might apply, we can and sometimes do miss such things when there is no indication of a non-US publication.
Based on your research about non-US origination, if we can't support the pre-1923 publication date, we'll need to pull it. -- Greg
It's possible that the book was pulished in the US within the 30 day window necessary to avoid copyright restoration, but I haven't seen any evidence yet for this. If PG does have more evidence that the book is now in the public domain, please let me know.
Thanks,
John

Thanks for following up, John. I checked earlier, and found the same thing you did...and having heard no further evidence, removed 26659 from the collection. The WW'ers can recycle that # for a future eBook. -- Greg
