I have just removed #38200 from the servers: Ilias by Homer Tr. Otto Manninen Language: Finnish It should be removed from GUTINDEX*, and might need a little help to be removed from the catalog. It turns out that the title/verso page indicated this was a REPRINT, but it was discovered that it was actually a substantially different translation. One translator (Manninen) is the same as the 1919 edition for which the clearance was granted, but subsequent reprintings involved additional translators. Because the post-1922 translations are new acts of "authorship," they warrant a new copyright. Therefore, we cannot use Rule 1 for this item, and no other rule is eligible for post-1923 items not first published in the US. FYI, I've re-used 38200 for one of my own productions. Al

Al, WW'ers: Sorry for the late response. I had corresponded with Larry individually, and should have cc'd gutcat & pgww. I would prefer to *not* re-use this number, and would like to instead leave #38200 empty. This is because we get complaints from downstream users of our collection & catalog when we do this type of update. Many sites (and their users) become confused when we make such changes, and this results in unhappy users, and support requests to our helpdesk (i.e., me). Since we are not running out of integers, I would rather choose the next number in the ticket sequence for all new eBooks. In the rare case (which just happened in the last week) that we need to unpost (or change) an eBook within the first few weeks after original posting, I think it's ok to re-use the number. But longer than a month or so, I would rather unpost withOUT re-using the unposted number. Other ideas or discussion is welcome. Thanks, Greg On Thu, Oct 11, 2018 at 12:58:08PM -0700, Al Haines wrote:

I've now emptied 38200's folder, unlinked/deleted its title/author/etc from the catalog, and reposted 38200 as 58115. I've sent an UNPosted note for 38200 and a posted note for 58115. I leave it to the gutcat people to add any extra notes about all this. Al
