Tale of the Witch Doll, by Mildred A. Wirt 34396 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/3/4/3/9/34396 ] [Files: 34396.txt; 34396-h.htm] Thanks to Stephen Hutcheson, Brenda Lewis and the Online Distributed Proofreading Team at http://www.pgdp.net Note to cataloguers: Mildred A. Wirt is also known as Mildred A. Wirt Benson. (Joan Clark is one of her pseudonyms.) Regards, Al

This book is copyrighted (copyright 1939, renewed 1966) but I see no mention of this on the etext or in the catalog entry. Does Gutenberg have permission to post this, or is there evidence it fell into the public domain, or was this cleared by mistake? (Some, but not all, of the other Wirt titles posted in the last few months also had their copyrights renewed. I can supply a list if needed.) Thanks, John Mark Ockerbloom Al Haines wrote:

John is correct as to "Tale of the Witch Doll" having its copyright renewed. Both the Rutgers (http://comminfo.rutgers.edu/~lesk/copyrenew.html) and the Stanford (http://collections.stanford.edu/copyrightrenewals/bin/page?forward=ho me) renewal databases show its having been renewed, as does PG's etext #11800: WIRT, MILDRED A. Tale of the witch doll. C 15Apr39; A128287. Cupples & Leon Co (PWH); 31Oct66; R397192. Al

It looks like this is correct. I checked, and it seems the person who did the Rule 6 non-renewal research missed the renewal somehow. I've removed the files, and we can re-use the number. If further evidence surfaces, we can reconsider. Thanks very much for spotting this, John! -- Greg

Thanks. Right below the renewal for Tales of the Witch doll is the the renewal for The Vanishing Houseboat, which was posted as etext #34683. So that one should go too, unless there's permission, or another reason that Gutenberg would be allowed to post it. I've sent an UNPosted note for 34396, cleared out its catalog info (title, author, etc), and will re-use the number for one of my own productions. If "The Vanishing Houseboat" (#34683), and any others like it John finds, are removed, I'll do the same for them. Al
