Hi, Not all entries are failing. I've been doing "refresh share attachment" on the New PG posts that didn't show the link and book cover correctly. There's been approx two per day over the last week. I've fixed occasional fails like this for years. It'd be great to have the automatic links fixed, if possible, thanks. Thanks for this, Christine. Apologies I didn't name you when I named Eric & Paul! I'm not sure I understand what the before- and after- looks like, when you fix links. If you can send a few details, perhaps with screenshots or examples, we can file an issue in github for Eric to consider. Thanks again. ~ Greg On Sat, Dec 09, 2023 at 10:38:27AM +1100, Christine Bell wrote:

Hi Greg, Please see four screenshot attachments of the most recent link that didn't upload properly and how I fixed it. It had the correct book link which works, but it lacks preview of title and book cover. After refreshing, it's perfect. On another note, we've had plenty of complaints about these generic blue/green book covers. It'd be good to use something more elegant, less colourful. I post two images a day onto our Facebook page and have never had this problem. I wonder if the problem is with the type of image. Try different image types and see if this makes a difference. It is also possible that the size of the image could be a problem. Can you try several different image sizes as well. Eric, Can you take a look at this? I wonder whether it's a timing issue, where the FB posting is made but the book landing page isn't available yet. I created a github issue for this: https://github.com/gutenbergtools/ebookconverter/issues/45 Christine, thank you! This is very helpful. I don't know what to say about the book covers... Eric wrote some code to make random ones, and they are only added when the eBook doesn't have its own cover scan. It would be possible for Eric's code to use less bright colors. I've never seen a complaint in the PG helpdesk inbox or elsewhere, so I wonder whether the complaints you see are not considerate and well-reasoned, but are just a byproduct of toxicity found on social media. About the book covers generated by PG. Some autistic people complained about them at Mastodon since they have a sensory dysfunction and it seems that our covers arrives in a distorted way in their brains. Hope this helps in some way. OK, the reason I didn't see the problem before is that Christine had fixed it with "refresh share attachment". There's no timing issue. For example, "in the name of Time" was created at 10:01 this morning and the facebook post was made at 10:21:11 We could check our logs to see if there were server response time issues at that time, but it seems not. We can check the logs to see when facebook first loaded the image. It's conceivable that our load balancer doesn't like traffic from the facebook unfurl caching bot. Update: the PG site has gotten slow right now! I bet that's the issue. More likely the problem is the facebook unfurl cache having issues. Nothing we can do about that. The code for the generative covers was developed by a team at New York Public Library. I fixed a few issues relating to encoding and long titles. BTW, I switched gutenberg new to the icon we're been using for the analogous service on mastodon. So far the reactions are 26 likes and 1 "you moved my cheese!"

Hi Eric. It's good to know this probably isn't a timing issue. The site slowness has just been for the past few days - I've complained to ibiblio, but they might not address it until Monday. If Christine was seeing this issue for weeks or months, then something else must be happening. Do you (Eric) know whether the unfurl only happens once and then is cached, or if it happens over and over? It might have a timeout, but usually the www.gutenberg.org site is pretty fast. Further thoughts on this are welcome. ~ Greg On Sun, Dec 10, 2023 at 03:13:05PM -0500, Eric Hellman wrote:

The unfurl is cached. It's likely that it gets refreshed periodically and that there may be separate caches serving different parts of the globe.
