For those wishing to know: James Ewing Ritchie was invited to accompany 
emigrants from England to Canada in order to write about how much better 
their life was there than in England (it was a scheme to try and improve 
the condition of the poor English working classes).  The book is an 
account of his experiences, and he offers advice to those thinking of 
moving to Canada - now a bit out of date of course!
