[For those interested, Jacques Loeb was one of the early investigators
in the biological sciences in America. He was born in Germany and received
his medical and scientific education there. He came to the U.S. a decade
before the turn of the 20th century. After serving on the faculty of
several universities, he wound up at the Rockefeller Institute. He made
numerous important contributions, most notably the demonstration of
parthenogenesis (the development of an unfertilized ovum in response to
chemical or physical stimuli). His publications were studied when I was in
training and probably still are.]
