This appears to have been an American pirated version of a British
(Chatto & Windus) edition published the same year. The U.S. did not
recognize British copyrights until about 1891. Thus, when Gilbert &
Sullivan operettas became popular, their works were published and
performed throughout the U.S. with NO royalties paid to Gilbert or
Sullivan. Gilbert was an astute businessman and developed a scheme
for simultaneous openings of new works in both London and New York,
thus establishing copyright in the U.S.
