For those wishing to know: Ritchie was the editor of Christian World and 
was very involved in social issues.  Believing that things were against 
the poor but able in England, he advocated emigration and visited places 
favoured for emigration, to speak to those there, and then report back to 
his readers.  He has a easy style and the book is as much travel writing 
as an emigrant's guide.
