For those wishing to know: another short sermon on a current (1862) topic
by Rev. Cowan (1828-1875). The American Civil War had interrupted cotton
supplies to the cotton making districts in Lancashire and coupled with
over-production, a great depression occured, with tens of thousands thrown
out of work, and starving to death. Cowan tells his congregation that
they have to give to help (of course), and pray (expected in a sermon),
because then when the Lancashire folk die of stravation they will be
waiting to thank his congregation when they reach heaven. The next parish
of Kensington raised very large amounts of money to help, don't remember
what Hammersmith provided.

All the best,
David
