Greetings, Some newbie questions: Q1: Which tool should I use to check my work, when transcribing a book to ReST? The Project Gutenberg ReST Manual [1] mentions 'epubmaker', but I wasn't able to get this to work on a recent Ubuntu GNU/Linux machine with Python 3. Would 'ebookmaker' [2] be a suitable replacement? Help needed in keeping the modified dates in FileZilla for PG-errata

I've been told that some PG-errata users are able to retain the modified date in FileZilla in Windows OS. How does someone do that? I've noticed that the created and accessed dates are blank on the PG book files I've looked at so far. For all of the files downloaded with FileZilla, Windows sets all three dates to the now date and time. Cheers, Rick

Help needed to diagnose RST problem

I have been doing PG donations using the RST format for many years and have encountered and fixed the "Title level inconsistent:" problem MANY times but my latest file is giving me this for no obvious reason. I'm hoping that one of you can see what I'm missing. My RST files all use this underline format for the headings: ============= for the title ----------------------- for h1 `````````````````````` for h2 This is consistent with what the PG footer uses and has NEVER caused problems in the past. An example of where I've used it successfully is here: https://dev.gutenberg.org/files/64046/ The situation where I generally get the error is if I try to add a fourth level. I've learned not to do that. The attached file uses exactly the same convention and fails. Works just fine with no PG footer directive, fails with *Title level inconsistent *once you add that directive. The TOC shows the levels I would expect to get. I have tried removing the ``````` level underlining and that changes the error reported (different character reported as not in list, ` instead of =) ValueError: '=' is not in list but it still fails. Removing the ---- as well doesn't fail but of course you have no headings https://ebookmaker.pglaf.org/cache/20201229095936/ is my latest attempt to run this. The RST file is attached. Thanks. Publishing RST books with Latex

A few months ago I looked at the PDFs produced by ebookmaker and wondered if it would be possible to create a utility that made a PDF good enough to use as interior pages for a print-on-demand book. I have been experimenting with rst2pdf (the utility program that ebookmaker's PDF generation is based on) and I've published a bunch of trade paperback books on Kindle Direct Publishing that started out as my RST donations to Project Gutenberg. The first picture shows proof copies from all the books I've published with this method. The second picture shows just how nice the interior pages look. Pictures can float inside paragraphs and alongside paragraphs, math formulas and fractions are formatted beautifully, and words are hyphenated automatically. I did cover images with The GIMP using either pictures from the book itself or other art in the public domain. I used free fonts and sometimes made them fancier by adding drop shadows and distortion effects in The GIMP. Converting an RST file to a nicely formatted TEX file can be done in one or two afternoons. The TEX file produced by rst2pdf needs to be touched up with a text editor, but this is surprisingly little work. If you don't have an RST file a plain text file from PG can be turned into an RST file with very little work. That is what I did with *Ancient Manners,* James Simmons

I am a new member and unfamiliar with your protocol. The site seems to be organized by date, not by subject. My purpose in joining is to share a set of AutoHotKey scripts I developed to simplify ordinary edit operations. For example, joining hyphenated word fragments, inserting non-English characters,and applying page brackets. The code is relatively well organized and commented and amenable to individual modification. I often modify it for specific texts, taking only a few minutes to do so. My objective is to avoid moving my eyes from the screen (I am not a touch typist) and minimizing hand motion. Nearly all corrections are done with two mouse clicks, open the operation menu and select the operation. I would like some feedback, and if positive, a place to post the code. Image sizes for donated e-books

I'm looking for some advice on image sizes for donated books. I'm also thinking of submitting a corrected version of a book I recently submitted and I could use some guidance on that too. I have been using RST for all my submissions, and my latest submission was this one: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/62549 This is my first attempt at an RST book with illustrations. I think the web page turned out pretty well, but when you read the book on a Kindle it is a different story. The illustrations are all 300 DPI and other than some rotation and cleaning up are the same size as was in the original PDF from Google Books. I specified that the illustrations should be displayed at 50% of the screen width, which looks nice in a web page but like postage stamps in the Kindle. The other thing I'm concerned about is the amount of disk space the image files take up. I'm thinking I would have been better off to display the pictures at 75% width or higher, and to use a Linux utility called "mogrify" to do a bulk resize on them to get the disk space usage down. I've got another book in the pipeline: https://www.google.com/books/edition/Aeroplane_construction_and_operation/e… This is a terrific book from 1918 called *Aeroplane Construction and Operation*. It is lavishly illustrated with photos and diagrams, and those images are a significant part of the value of the book. Having said that, the zipped up RST + image files is a hefty 98 mb. You can side load something that size into a Kindle or Nook, but you can't email it. I plan to keep a copy of the 300DPI files so I can make a print on demand version of this book, but I'm willing to bulk resize the images to a smaller size for PG. Eric, I have experimented with .tex and looked at the source code for ebookmaker and have concluded that updating that code to produce print- on-demand ready files would be more trouble than it is worth. This afternoon I took one of my own RST donations, ran it against rst2xetex.py and with about a half hour of simple edits I made a .tex file that produced a PDF that met all of Kindle Direct Publishing's requirements and looked great. Any .tex file I could produce with a modified ebookmaker would still need a few manual edits to get ready for publication, so I think there would be greater benefit if I just taught people to do what I just learned to do. I understand that RST is not a very popular way to prepare PG donations but I think it would be if more people knew about it. You do have a very short article on RST in the Wiki but it is hard to find, even harder if you don't know what RST is and just want some tips on how to do a PG donation with less work. I think I could write something more fleshed out that actually sells the idea of using RST. I could also do a second article on using RST files for print on demand. Using ebookmaker to create PDFs for print on demand publishing

My first impression of the PDF's created by ebookmaker was that with a little work they might be suitable for print on demand publishing like I have done several times with Create Space. I have spent a few hours installing ebookmaker on my own computer and experimenting with Tex and the attached files represent the kind of thing that ebookmaker might be modified to produce. They are not perfect, but I think they are good enough to criticize. Some observations: 1. The Tex file was created by running my original RST file against both ebookmaker and rst2xetex.py. The two files that were produced were combined to produce the Tex file attached. Rst2xetex.py does not understand the custom RST elements PG uses so I had to make a version of the RST file without them to get rst2xetex to run properly. 2. The output of rst2xetex was actually closer to what I wanted than what ebookmaker produced. Ebookmaker does a table of contents that is just links with no page numbers, and the headings are not regular headings and subheadings that Tex uses. Rst2xetex gave me regular headings and subheadings that could create the TOC I wanted. I had to run xelatex against the Tex file twice to create the PDF with a TOC. 3. I think that a Tex file is a more useful output for ebookmaker than a finished PDF. Create Space wants you to have ISBN and ISBN-13 numbers on the Verso, so having a Tex file to edit is easier than trying to edit a PDF. Also, PG has a lot of short stories that could be combined to create anthologies and that would be easier with Tex files. 4. Question on PDF conversion in PG epub maker

I have made some printed books based on Project Gutenberg texts. One example: https://www.amazon.com/Mahabharata-Book-I-Beginning/dp/1492299227/ What I ended up doing was importing the HTML version into Libre Office, saving it in the native format, adding styles, moving footnotes from the back of the texts to the bottoms of pages, etc. It was a lot of tedious work but the results were excellent. I would like to make books like this from my own PG donations, which were done as RST files. I noticed that the PDF generated from my RST was surprisingly good. For one thing, the footnote were already at the bottoms of pages. There were things I didn't like about the PDF, but with a little work whatever generated it might make something suitable for publishing through Create Space, These are the kinds of changes I would make: 1. The page size should be 6" by 9", a standard trade paperback size. 2. The fonts should be larger, maybe 12 pt. I'd like to choose the fonts used, and add custom fonts for title pages, etc. 3. Margins should be suitable for Create Space (or whatever Amazon is calling it now). I program computers for a living, so I could make these changes for myself with a few hints on what software is used to convert the RST to PDF format. I have found a utility that does that: https://rst2pdf.org However, this does not give the result I want. It puts the footnotes at the end of the book, and there are other issues with it. The manual explains how to deal with some of them, but not the footnotes. So I am looking for some explanation of how the PG epub maker does this. Thanks. James Simmons
