i recently rewrapped the p.g. version of "pride and prejudice" to the linebreaks from a scan-set of that book on archive.org.
http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/1342/pg1342.txt http://www.archive.org/details/prideprejudiceno00austuoft
text diffs between p.g. "pride and prejudice" and archive.org scanset o.c.r. these diffs _probably_ represent version edits made between the two editions. (but some of 'em are merely still-uncorrected errors made by the o.c.r. app.) many spelling and punctuation differences were eliminated from this
this allowed me to easily compare the o.c.r. from the scan-set to the p.g. e-text. that comparison confirms that the two texts are from different _editions_ of the book, as carlo had indicated. most of the changes appear to be the type an editor would make -- transpositions, grammar, spellings, punctuation, and so on -- although i suppose it's possible some were made by the author... i have appended a list of 858 of these changes, all of which involve some kind of change to the text of the line, ignoring punctuation and spelling (visitor/visiter, judgement/judgment). (actually, it looks like i can only send the first 200 of 'em. but that's probably more than enough to give you the flavor.) *** checking these diffs against the scans would give rather good assurance that the corrected o.c.r. was adequately accurate... that is, if there _are_ errors, they are probably shown here. there were only a few places where edits were so large that they caused even a minor problem for this line-diff method. *** and this illustrates how somebody -- even your competitor -- could use a p.g. text to create their own more-accurate text, one that was linked with a scan-set and thus had provenance. if you let a competitor do this, before you do it yourself, you are allowing yourself to be upstaged in the marketplace. -bowerbird listing.

this allowed me to easily compare the o.c.r. from the scan-set to the p.g. e-text. that comparison confirms that the two texts are from different _editions_ of the book, as carlo had indicated.
_Pride and Prejudice_ was part of the "Harvard Classics" collection, and is so indicated by the Gutenberg Bibrec (which I would still like to see copied to readingroo.ms). I would suggest you re-run your experiment against http://www.archive.org/details/harvardclassicss03elio or http://books.google.com/books?id=7dgNAAAAYAAJ.

It might be a different revision of the Harvard Classics, since there are a few differences not due to OCR. Some systematic: [-dare say-] {+daresay+} 29 times and some occasional, like: [-quite-] {+very+} {+you+} (added/removed) [-may-] {+might+} [-daughters-] {+nieces+} {+very+} [-that-] {+so+} {+had+} [-hear-] {+overhear+} {+all+} [-out-] {+very+} [-making themselves-] {+being+} [-more pleasant-] {+pleasanter+} [-is-] {+was+} [-would-] {+will+} (I stopped at 5%) and several punctuation differences. The PG version seems very clean, but a bit more "modern".

I do recall seeing "corrections" made to a P&P in PG quite a while ago, where someone had updated older spellings, assuming that they were mistakes. That might account for those differences. I recall being annoyed at the time, when I ran a diff and saw changes like "shew" to "show". More annoying was that it had not been done consistently throughout the text. Actually, as I go and look again, the current text still has a mix of "shew" and "show" used in it. So don't expect it to match any particulat print edition. Take a look at: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/1342/old/ to see the jumble of older files. --Andrew

I wouldn't expect it to match any particular print edition. But if it /was/ derived from the "Harvard Classics" edition, auto-rewrapping to that scan set ought to be possible even with the editorial revisions.
