I have a contribution

Hi, I've just signed up to this list. I found Gutenberg a few years ago, but didn't have scanning or OCR facilities. I have recently bought a Kindle and down-loaded quite a few books. I have scanned and part-proof-read my copy of John Buchan's 'Castle Gay', and see that there is no copy of this in the catalog. I've been trying to work out how I can contribute this, but the volunteering pages all assume that only proof-readers for already uploaded books are needed. I have a number of other John Buchan books that I could work on, but is there any point? A secondary question: can anyone recommend a way of converting my stuff into Kindle format - I run Ubuntu Linux, but so far have found only software to read Kindle format. Many thanks Bill -- +----------------------------------+ | Bill Purvis, Book-Scanner | | gut@billp.org | +----------------------------------+

This book has been published in 1930 (after 1922), hence it is still subject to copyright in the US, so Project Gutenberg cannot publish it. Since John Buchanan died in 1940, his works are in the public domain in almost every country, in particular in Canada. This makes his books suitable for Project Gutenberg Canada, also because of his connections with Canada. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Buchan,_1st_Baron_Tweedsmuir. The best entry point could be through Distributed Proofreaders Canada, http://pgdpcanada.net Of course, if you have pre-1923 books, they can be published by Project Gutenberg too. See for example http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Gutenberg:Public_Domain_eBook_Submission_How-T... on how to contribute directly to PG without passing through Distributed Proofreaders or DP canada. This is available at Project Gutenberg Australia, where it is out of copyright.
Pity I wasn't aware of that - still, I've enjoyed the work so far. Bill -- +----------------------------------+ | Bill Purvis, Book-Scanner | | gut@billp.org | +----------------------------------+

Bill, Castle Gay and many other Buchan books are projects at Distributed Proofreaders Canada (http://www.pgdpcanada.net/c/default.php). (I supplied many of the scansets.) Since they were published after 1922, therefore not in the public domain in the U.S., they will eventually become part of Project Gutenberg Canada's collection (http://www.gutenberg.ca/). For contributing to PG-US, have you read the various How-To articles at http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Category:How-To and FAQ articles at http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Category:FAQ? (Both are accessible from PG-US's home page at http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page.) The Volunteers' FAQ (especially section 7) and the Copyright How-To should get you started. For checking text files for common scanning/OCR errors, the utilities at http://gutcheck.sourceforge.net/etc.html are recommended. Gutcheck, Jeebies, and Gutspell are particularly important (vital, even). (These utilities do *not* replace proofing.) You should also check out David Price's In-Progress list at http://www.dprice48.freeserve.co.uk/GutIP.html. (The list is huge, and may take a couple of minutes to download.) It will show you if a given pre-1923 book is in the PG-US collection, and if not, whether or not it's been copyright-cleared by anyone. If a book isn't in PG-US and has not been copyright-cleared, it won't be in the list. Note that the list covers only books and clearances for PG-US. Amazon offers their "kindlegen" software in Linux format: "KindleGen is a command line tool used to build eBooks that can be sold through Amazon's Kindle platform. This tool is best for publishers and individuals who are familiar with HTML and want to convert their HTML, XHTML, XML (OPF/IDPF format), or ePub source into a Kindle Book." http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000234621
