A letter to a country clergyman, occasioned by his address to Lord Teign 62232 [Title: A letter to a country clergyman, occasioned by his address to Lord Teignmouth] [Author: John Owen] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/2/3/62232 ] [Files: 62232-0.txt; 62232-h.htm] For those wishing to know: around 1804 Lord Teignmouth, president of the newly-formed British and Foreign Bible Society wrote to the clergy of the Church of England, inviting them to join. This occasioned a public rebuke from Rev. Thomas Sikes, condemning any society that "tolerated" dissenters (those not of the Church of England). This is a very good-humoured reply to Sikes' pamphlet, which is jolly but takes apart the Sikes pamphlet and shows why charity is required, not bigotism. Owen was vicar of Fulham - hence why I got the pamphlet for transcription (I research the Kensington area). All the best, David, England at night, but it's still warm

Extracts from "Sikes on Parochial Communion", by Thomas Sikes 62228 [Subtitle: relating to Episcopacy, and the sin of Schism] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/2/2/62228 ] [Files: 62228-0.txt; 62228-h.htm] For those wishing to know: having released an eBook by Sikes a few numbers back, I felt that I had been a bit hard on him, and the book didn't really represent his views or paint him in a good light. I've therefore transcribed this one which was published in Oxford many years after Sikes's death, by some high-church clergyman who was no doubt seeking to ingraciate himself to Rev. Samuel Wilberforce, then the high-church Bishop of Oxford. Unfortunately it just confirms my original impression. Sikes does, however, seem to have been an inspirer of the Oxford Tractarians and the pamphlet is very much their views. All the best, David Sunny England with blue skies

Battlefield Church, Salop, by W. G. Dimock Fletcher 62225 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/2/2/62225 ] [Files: 62225-0.txt; 62225-h.htm] For those wishing to know: in 1403 there was a major battle in the War of the Roses about four miles north of Shrewsbury, and King Henry 4th winning, he built a church to commemorate it. Rev. Fletcher was a local antiquarian and wrote about the church (which still exists), the battle etc. If you are in England then there's now a very nice Battlefield centre selling books etc., and also farm produce and an excellent cafe! All the best, David, Sunny English with blue skies and a white, whispy clouds
