Plain Parochial Sermons, by James Slade 62223 [Subtitle: preached in the Parish Church of Bolton-le-Moors] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/2/2/62223 ] [Files: 62223-0.txt; 62223-h.htm] For those wishing to know: in 1854 George Borrow and his family heard "one of the best sermons we had ever heard" - it was given by the author of this book. James Slade had a major reputation for preaching and was on the staff of Chester Cathdral for decades. The sermons are quite brief and strongly evangelical. All the best, David Sunny England

Remarks upon the proposed destruction of the tower of the Parish Church 62222 [Title: Remarks upon the proposed destruction of the tower of the Parish Church of St. John, Hampstead] [Author: George Gilbert Scott] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/2/2/62222 ] [Files: 62222-0.txt; 62222-h.htm] For those wishing to know: (on a personal note) I bought this by mistake at a bookfair, thinking it was about Hammersmith church, but I'm very glad I did because it turns out to be a very interesting little pamphlet. George Gilbert Scott was an architect who lived next to St. John's church, Hampstead, who disagreed with a proposed "restoration" of the church which would see the demolition of the tower, which was thought to be in a dangerous state. George's father had surveyed the tower decades before and pointed out why cracks had appeared, had predicted the rate of decay etc., and said there was not an on-going problem, which George re-explained, together with the survey he'd carried out. The reason for the cracking was obvious once explained, but came as a surprise to me. All the best, David, Sunny England with clear blue skies

Our Sabbaths in Danger, by Daniel Moore 62221 [Subtitle: A Sermon, deprecating the comtemplated opening of the Crystal Palace on the Lord's-Day] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/2/2/62221 ] [Files: 62221-0.txt; 62221-h.htm] For those wishing to know: the churches reacted badly to the proposal to open the Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoons for the working classes (1853). Rev. Moore thinks all of the Sabbath is for religious, not pleasure etc. All the best, David, Sunny England with blue skies

The New Crystal Palace and the Christian Sabbath, by John Weir 62220 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/2/2/62220 ] [Files: 62220-0.txt; 62220-h.htm] For those wishing to know: another pamphlet against the plan to open the Crystal Palace to the working classes on Sunday afternoon in 1853. Originally Rev. Weir preached it as a sermon because the clergy of the parish had decided to unite against the plan, and he was then encouraged to publish it. He makes the point that having the morning for religion and the rest of the day for holiday, was a Catholic practice, and if England followed she'd be in trouble. All the best, David, Sunny England with clear blue skies
