A letter addressed to the Right Honourable Lord Robert Grosvenor, M.P. 62158 [Author: Rev. Evan Evans] [Subtitle: expanatory of the object and design of the Chester Cambrian Society] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/1/5/62158 ] [Files: 62158-0.txt; 62158-h.htm] For those wishing to know: Lord Grosvenor was Patron of a Welsh-language Society that had been founded in Chester to provide help to those living in Chester who had little English, there being at least one thousand such in 1832 when it was written. It's a history of the Society, explains what it was doing and why etc. All the best, David, England with blue skies and big white clouds

The Chester and Holyhead Railway and its Prospects, by William Morgan 62157 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/1/5/62157 ] [Files: 62157-0.txt; 62157-h.htm] For those wishing to know: the construction of the Chester to Holyhead railway had been a lot more difficult than anticipated and by the late 1840's the shareholders were starting to get worried as the complex job of bridging the Menai Straits hadn't been accomplished. Shares prices dropped and William Morgan, a shareholder, wrote this short pamphlet to encourage his fellow shareholders to stick with it as it was almost done. It's interesting what he cites as being the huge income sources when the line opens. All the best, David England, blue skies but misty clouds

A Letter to the Kensington Canal Company 62153 [Title: A Letter to the Kensington Canal Company on the Substitution of the Pneumatic Railway for the common Railway] [Author: John Vallance] [Subtitle: by which they contemplate extending their line of conveyance] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/1/5/62153 ] [Files: 62153-0.txt; 62153-h.htm] For those wishing to know: In 1827, at Brighton, England, John Vallance constructed a pneumatic railway where people were propelled through a tube by atomospheric pressure rather than being pulled by a stream engine. He demonstrated that it was possible, but couldn't get backing. By 1833 the Kensington Canal Company (West London) were considering turning their failed canal into a railway, and Vallance saw his opportunity. The "letter" is a long essay on how pnuematic railways work, what had been proven, why they would be superior to the stream railway etc. He didn't convince them but the essay shows Vallance was years ahead of his time in seeing the issues in high speed rail, the basics of railway engineering etc. All the best, David England with a nice sunset
