Primrose Hill Park, Regent's Park, and Hampstead Heath, William Ray Smee 62152 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/1/5/62152 ] [Files: 62152-0.txt; 62152-h.htm] For those wishing to know: William Ray Smee lived near Regent's Park in London, and was concerned about the vast number of people who filled in the park (this was around 1873). In particular there were thousands of kids who wanted to play, and nowhere near enough space. He wrote the the Prime Minister asking the Government to buy land to extend the park, running it to Primrose Hill Park (which was to the north) and thence to Hamspstead Heath. I'm not really sure why he printed the pamphlet as he should have written to the Metropolitan Board of Works, not the P.M., as Gladstone wrote back and told him. All the best, David, Sunny England but plenty of light gray clouds

Letter to the Friends and Subscribers of the Church Pastoral-Aid Society 62144 [Author: Rev. Caleb Whiteford] [Subtitle: occasioned by a letter from the Rev. Dr. Molesworth] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/1/4/62144 ] [Files: 62144-0.txt; 62144-h.htm] For those wishing to know: Rev. Dr. Molesworth had printed a letter alledging mis-management of the Church of England Church Pastoral Aid Society. This is a reply to those allegations, which explains what the Society was for, its finances and how they were spent etc. It gives a useful insider view of the issues going on in the background at the time (around 1840). All the best, David, England, bright but with substantial clouds

Sabbath-Breaking on the Canal, by Rev. John Clutton 62143 [Subtitle: A Poem] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/1/4/62143 ] [Files: 62143-0.txt; 62143-h.htm] For those wishing to know: written around 1820 by the Rev. John Clutton, Prebendary of Hereford (i.e. paid member of Cathedral staff), this poem tells the poverty-striken labours on the canals to go to Church on Sunday, rather than work. It illustrates the then-growing divide between the middle-class and affluent Church of England clergy and the working classes who were being dramatically affected by the industrial revolution. He dedicates it to his friend Rev. John Davies (in nearly Worcester) who had apparently printed a sermon on the spiritual state of those working on the canal. All the best, David Sunny England but still quite a lot of light gray clouds

The History of Whittington, by William Davies 62142 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/1/4/62142 ] [Files: 62142-0.txt; 62142-h.htm] Written in 1811 about the village in Shropshire where he grew up, this appears to be the only published history of the place until very recently. Whittington is not only very beautiful, but it has a ruined castle and most of the book is concerned with the history of the castle and the feudal Lords who occupied it. If you are ever in the area, I'd recommend a visit (particularly on a nice day when their tea shop is open - very good cakes!) All the best, David, England, clouding over

An Earnest Exhortation to a Frequent Reception of the Holy Sacrament of 62141 [Title: An Earnest Exhortation to a Frequent Reception of the Holy Sacrament of the Lord's Supper] [Author: James Allan Park] [Subtitle: particularly addressed to Young Persons] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/1/4/62141 ] [Files: 62141-0.txt; 62141-h.htm] For those wishing to know: Sir James Allan Park was a British Judge and wrote this pamphlet as he felt a lot of "young people" were not participating in the Church of England ritual for spurious reasons. It's intersting that he says that far fewer men than women were participating - the tract being written 1804. It was repeatedly republished and sold well, and may provide early signs of what became the Oxford Movement, although I think he wouldn't have agreed with them. All the best, David Sunny England with light gray clouds
